Lakai Footwear Limited is a footwear company based in Torrance, California that creates shoes designed for and inspired by skateboarding. Lakai was founded by professional skateboarders and Girl Skateboards co-founders Mike Carroll and Rick Howard in 1999. They felt they could make a contribution to the skate-footwear world by running their own company rather than riding for someone else's. The company was formed after both riders left DC Shoes. After the release of Lakai's tour video 'Beware of the Flare' in June 2002, their first full-length team video “Fully Flared” premiered on November 16, 2007. It was released on DVD on December 7, 2007. It went on to receive the Years Best Video Award from The Skateboard Mag and the best video award at the 10th Transworld Skateboarding Awards.
