PTSD, in both military and civilian populations co-occur with chronic pain (60% to 80%) resulting in increased opioid use and "abnormal pain perception". Screening for PTSD with chronic pain prevents escalating opioid use and appropriately addresses PTSD and chronic pain with cognitive behavioral modalities for anxiety and pain management. Israeli researcher have concluded that an emotion related gene together with preoccupation with threat when enlisting and pre-deployment threat vigilance and avoidance together account for more than a third of PTSD symptoms in soldiers. See JAMA Psychiatry February 13, 2013.

The Mayo Clinic has conducted research on whether blood clotting factors in post menopausal women increase the risk of dementia and stroke. Women with higher levels of of thrombogenic microvesicles were likelier to have white matter hyperintensities in the brain and likelier to develop "brain damage". See Neurology, Feb 13, 2013.
